Consulting for small business is a great challenge. No two situations are alike in small business, because all entrepreneurs approach their ventures differently. However, the base fundamental issues surrounding ALL small businesses are encapsulated in the following summary problem areas:
1. They can’t sell enough product or service,
2. They can’t install fast enough or with sufficient quality,
3. They can’t adequately track their sales or their costs to get an accurate read on why they don’t make money, and
4. Owners have a pre-disposed list of "untouchables". For example, non-performing family members in the business, vendor relationships that are not win-win for both parties, and/or the lack of confrontational skills or courage to change what needs to be changed. It is that simple!
Now of course there are many details underneath these 4 main problem areas, and all of them have to be flushed out and addressed, but they will all fall into the categories above. Owners spend a lot of time trying to "out earn" the uncle that continues to mess up every install so that even the best job costing models are laid to waste. Or they spend oodles of time in cost cutting measures within the organization, only to fail to enforce the same kinds of cost cutting on themselves or their relatives.
Lastly, it doesn’t matter what kind of business you have. All businesses need to sell it right, install it right, account for it right, and rinse and repeat.
